Philosophy
What we’re for, and how we build.
What we believe
Parents shape the future.
It is my belief that better parenting leads to happier, healthier kids. And that these happier, healthier kids are more likely to become well adjusted resilient adults. It may sound grandiose, but it is also obviously true that the future of our world will be determined by these future adults.
Good advice exists.
There are wonderful parenting books and experts. The trouble is that the experts aren’t present and the book’s advice is not top of mind in the moments you most need it.
Life is busy.
In addition to being a parent I am working full time, engaging in daily household work and admin, doing my best to nurture relationships with my partner, family and friends, and attempting to maintain a reasonable level of fitness. If we are going to improve our parenting it has to respect the limited bandwidth parents have.
We are doing our best.
And yet, we would, naturally, like to do better.
How we are building
We don’t want to tell you how to parent.
You bring your values; we help you live them a little more consistently. The right approach is the one that fits your family, and that’s yours to choose.
Your family’s data is yours.
We don’t sell it, and we never will. Not now, and not later in some subtle change buried in legal fine print. We don’t use it to train anyone else’s models. The original recordings are deleted automatically within 48 hours of being processed. You choose what’s kept, and you can delete any of it (or all of it) at any time. Instead of your data being bought and sold for the profit of others, we want to help you reclaim your data for your own benefit.
Pairent isn’t free (You are not the product).
This means we don’t have to extract value from our users through advertising and personal profiles built to sell you things. We are not incentivized to keep you endlessly scrolling so we can collect more user data which we can then use to serve you more targeted ads, or sell to the highest bidder. We charge a fair price, honestly and up front, and put it toward building the best possible product. One that we use ourselves, everyday.
We know this isn’t for everyone.
The idea of recording family moments can feel strange, or even uncomfortable. We understand that. Some of my close friends have gotten rid of their Alexa speaker and would never use Pairent. A lot of that unease is earned: the tech industry spent years teaching people that “free” and “convenient” come with a hidden cost (even innocuous weather apps aren’t so “free” after all). So, we get that it is a big ask for a tech company to say “trust us”, but we are doing our best to earn that trust.
